Did you ever struggle with math in school? Do you remember a time when learning did not come easy? My students face these challenges with math everyday, but they do not have all of the tools necessary to complete the tasks set before them.
My classroom is composed of students from an impoverished, rural West Virginia neighborhood, where resources are scarce.
They are hard-working, kind, and compassionate, but they lack the materials necessary to keep up with 21st Century mathematics. In addition, many of my students come from homes where the parents are not able to provide resources for learning. Our school is for intermediate aged children in Third through Fifth grades. We strive to provide equal opportunities for all of our students, making math and reading proficiency of high priority. We want our students to be successful in a 21st Century environment that requires strong math skills.
My Project
My students need hands-on manipulatives and tools such as Pentominoes, spinners, and tiles to assist with learning mathematics skills. I am requesting math manipulatives that will afford my students the opportunity to invest hands-on time with real-world materials in the classroom. Students will learn how to conduct investigations, work with realistic materials, and correspond with classmates to solve problems.
This project is so important because my students care about their success.
These are the students that strive to graduate from college and become successful members of society. Without the appropriate tools, their dreams of success may never come to pass.
