Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students come from a variety of countries, primarily Spanish-speaking in a low-income, urban community, Roxbury, Massachusetts. As an extended learning time school, students are enrolled in school for extra time throughout the day. They face challenges throughout the year, from low income to trauma and everything in between. All students are provided free lunches. However, our students come together to form a phenomenal student body, bringing their individual characteristics, strengths, weaknesses, differences, and cultures into one. Every day, we grow as a school and take one step to improving each other. Our kids make the most of their opportunity to learn, achieve and succeed given these challenges.
My Project
Our school has no formal gymnasium. We utilize an empty classroom that has been converted into a gymnasium for the kids to achieve their Physical Education requirements. The basketball hoop was already broken prior to my arrival as a P.E. teacher and I can tell it was one of their favorite parts of gym class.
Our students always wonder when the broken hoop is going to be fixed!
We will utilize this to add to our Physical Education curriculum as students spend majority of the day indoors, especially when weather can sometimes keep us inside for majority of the Boston winter. It would also be very valuable for the kids to be able to also play during indoor recess.
