Hidden Figures: Providing Diverse Literature to Students
Help me give my students a text that will give them a look at the impact Katherine Johnson and other African Americans had on contemporary science and space exploration, along with the hurdles they had to overcome.
My students are a mix of multi-ethnic backgrounds who search to understand one another and to also understand their place in the world.
They seek truth and understanding in order to make connections from their textbooks in the classroom to the outside world.
"Hidden Figures" is not only an excellent nonfiction text that provides my students a glimpse into the Civil Rights movement and some of the obstacles that African Americans have faced in our country, but it provides a story of hope and strength. I have taught this book for two years, and my students absolutely love it! It draws them into deep discussions and makes them ask questions of society and of themselves. However, the current class set I have (previously purchased with personal funds) is wearing out. In order to continue teaching this text, I would like to replenish the class set, and make it accessible to all teachers on my campus.
