My Students

We are a strong urban community full of vibrant, curious learners, who are eager to express themselves and their individual stories as they learn and grow. Students in our school come from many diverse backgrounds and many speak multiple languages. Our school is located in Northeast Philadelphia and sits in the middle of a busy urban community.

Our students are in need of novels to assist in their Civil Rights studies related to Black History Month.

The children are part of a Title I school community. They will benefit by being given the books and project tools with which to express their understanding of Civil Rights. They will also expand their vision of what community and citizenship mean and how they, themselves are tasked with the responsibility of being dedicated citizens.

My Project

It is essential to my students' growth as readers and as multiracial citizens of the United States, to understand the obstacles faced by those before them, as well as the obstacles that they, themselves may face now and in the future. We will endeavor to understand the basis of civil rights, black history, and women's history through the lens of the novel, Hidden Figures.

Students will explore the theme of civil rights represented in the novel, Hidden Figures, and students will discuss the obstacles and accomplishments of these women.

Students will also identify ways in which they, themselves connect with the women of the novel through activities such as writing tasks, cooperative learning projects, creative arts, and extensive classroom discussion.
