Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach high school students who have been diagnosed with a variety of moderate to severe disabilities, and yet they all thrive to put forth their best selves every day. I teach in California in a city that has high gang activity and violence, and while that does affect a small group of students on campus, it does not define who we are as a whole. We are a No Excuses University School and thrive to teach our students that they too can achieve greatness both during their high school career and beyond! First, high school then college and career! All of our students know that there is a journey waiting for them after graduation, and it's up to them to choose the path they take to get to where they want to go.

My Project

I teach high school students who have moderate to severe disabilities. Because they are in high school they will all have opportunities available to them to get a paying job when they turn 16. It is my job to make sure that they have the foundation needed to be successful in these paying positions.

Success starts in the classroom.

To help my students reach their workforce goals I need materials to set up mock workstations where they can practice the skills needed to work at various locations in the county. These skills include pouring, filling, packaging, sorting, and more. The sorting trays and counting bears will be used to teach students how to sort items and stock shelves, and the nuts and bolts sets will be used to train students in the process of assembly. The salt, pepper and cheese shakers paired with the sand and funnels will be used to teach students how to fill and prepare shaker containers at restaurants. The fruit cutting set will be used to train for culinary arts classes. Students need to know the basic use and safety rules before participating in this class. Hangers will be used to train students how to hang shirts and hang them on racks and the dish towels will be used to practice folding. These are skills students need to work in placements like department stores, thrift stores, and it will even help prepare them for independent home living. The wash rags and spray bottles will be used to train students on surface wiping. This is a program that is already in place at our school, but we need more materials to maximize student participation and skill building. These activities will open doors to all kinds of work activities and opportunities in our community.
