Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students love to read and they love to learn. Not being with them daily is a struggle, especially when we are trying to grow them as thoughtful readers.

Often my students do not have access to the books that they need because the local and school libraries are closed.

Our School is a Title I school with 100% of the students eligible to receive free and reduced price lunch. Student success is the goal for every student and faculty member at our elementary school. We have an outstanding school where we believe that each child can and will grow to his/her full potential and become an independent learner through our dedication to high-quality, research-based best educational practices.

The environment of our grade is one that prepares each student to be successful in and outside of our classrooms. We use what we learn inside our classrooms to be prepared citizens for the real world. Our best learning is accomplished when real-world experiences are at our fingertips. Not being with my students on a daily basis make connecting through books even more important. It can give them a break from reality.

My Project

For students to truly comprehend a story, they need to do a couple of things. They need to be willing to contribute to the conversations, they need to push their thinking, they need to be willing to take risks, they need to have confidence in the story. This is not easy to achieve, especially if you cannot connect with the books that you are reading.

For students to do all the things, they need to do in order to truly comprehend a story, students need to connect deeply with the characters in their stories.

They need the share in their struggles, be inspired by their work ethic, trust that it is possible for them too. Books allow us to dive into new worlds and can help us celebrate diversity. When planning online learning activities, this is even more important. Missing that personal connection with students emphasizes the need for books that students can connect with.

As a teacher, I know how beneficial it is to have books with diverse characters and experiences in my classroom. But what happens when we don’t have a classroom to go back to safely. This project puts books in my hands, as the teacher, that will do all of these things for my students. It will help them connect, when they are reading an excerpt, or listening to me read it to them, or looking for ways to push themselves to think harder. It is so important for my students to see themselves in the book we read. Not only do the books in this project reflect different cultures, but they also help teach important lessons for kids of any age. I want to make sure our classroom library is always improving.
