Our school is a TITLE I school. Our families are hard working and want the best for their children, as do the teachers working with these kiddos. All students at our school receive free breakfast and lunch. About 1/2 of our parents do not speak English. All student learning is at optimum when hands on learning is involved, this even more critical for second language learners. All students can become eager learners when a teacher finds a method for engaging the individual.
Cooperative learning occurs best with structure. Our library currently has a rug that is over a decade old and is not conducive to a seating arrangement that encourages academic discourse. This rug we're requesting, with its individualized spaces, will allow students to know who is his or her partner. We use KAGAN structures in our library. With the seating this rug has laid out, the students will know who is their shoulder and/or their face partner. Having this structure in place encourages the flow of learning to run smoother and therefore more knowledge gained within our time constraints. Exciting to think that just a rug could increase academic learning!
