"Click,clack,ding!" Argh! My students need 25 headphones so that they can focus while working on computers & 25 flash drives for securely storing data and projects!
Despite being in one of the poorest areas of the city, our school has met AYP two years in a row... Our students, our parents, our teachers, continue to strive everyday as we face the challenges of today's ever changing world.
My students are inquisitive, they are risk takers, and they are passionate about learning more about the world in which they live.
Many of the people that hear where I teach make assumptions about my students. They assume that they are uncaring, unaware, and uninspiring... they couldn't be more wrong. Despite the many challenges my students have faced and continue to face they push themselves to improve academically and socially every single day. Absences are few and far between, even though the building is old and it's not uncommon for the air/heat to go out. My students know and track their own progress and are actively involved in making achievement goals. The responsibility that they take for their learning is awe inspiring. They are not children that attend an old school, in a poor and dangerous neighborhood. They are not children who are on free and reduced lunch and who are in need of assistance to meet their basic needs... They are our future and through their eyes it's bright!
My Project
While my students have been very blessed with technology through grants and community donations, they are often disturbed in their train of thought. While trying to prepare students for the technological world in which they live, it can become very hard to focus when all around other students are exploring their worlds. Having headphones will allow students to focus on their own thoughts and creativity thereby allowing them to produce higher quality projects with a deeper understanding of the content they applied while completing the assignment. Having flash drives will save that heartache that comes with spending precious time on a project, only to find that your data was not saved to the desktop as you thought it was, and is nowhere to be found! Flash drives will further enforce my students' responsibility over their learning.
