Students in our Smart Lab learn differently. They embrace challenges, question their peers, and are not bound by the expectations of others. They enjoy engineering real-world solutions that provide them with opportunities to collaborate, think critically and creatively, and communicate with one another.
Exposing our learners to engineering design challenges will build mastery in other content areas such as math and science.
Failure will be part of our process, but they will succeed. They will be challenged by obstacles. Our students are of the mindset, "I just don't get this yet... but I WILL!
My Project
Students in kindergarten through 6th grade will use Goobi Magnetic Construction Sets to learn about geometry, physics, and architecture. Lessons will be planned using the Engineering Design Process and Project-Based Learning.
Research shows when students are exposed to the real-world application of engineering in elementary school they are more likely to become aware of the opportunities for careers in engineering, science, and technology fields.
Younger students will engage in hands-on lessons to identify and build three-dimensional figures including rectangular prisms, square pyramids, and cubes. They will analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes of different sizes, orientations and attributes, identifying vertices(corners), number of sides and length. Intermediate students will build three-dimensional figures using nets made up of rectangles and triangles, find the surface area of these figures, and apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
