This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are amazing! They love music and some are budding singers, rap stars and instrumentalists.
Many of my students can connect with the words of Maya Angelou, “Music was my refuge - I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness.” Many come from backgrounds where the whole family treasures music, but often can't afford private lessons or instruments.
For some of my students, life can be difficult. Their neighborhood faces many challenges, but every parent of every student in this school wants their child to excel and confront any challenges head on.
My Project
I am requesting ten ukuleles so my students can start learning basic instrument skills Think back to your music class in elementary school. What do you remember? What memories are the strongest? Maybe you played recorder. Maybe your school had xylophones or African drums. Did you get to join an after school guitar club? Were you lucky enough to play ukulele?
So many children find their passions in those first early experiences with instruments - help my students find their passion for ukuleles and music-making by supporting my project!
My students are always asking, "When are we going to get the instruments out?" Sometimes I feel like we are falling into an instrument rut because I only have a limited number of instruments in my classroom. Please help me diversify my classroom instruments so we can get different instruments out every class.
