As a special education teacher, I have the privilege of working in a self-contained bridge-classroom setting. This setting includes the maximum amount of 12 students with various learning obstacles including learning impairments, speech impairments, ADHD, Autism and emotional needs ranging from grades 3, 4, and 5. These students come from places all over the world with more than 8 different countries! Every day brings a new experience because of my beloved students. My students are amazing in so many ways but there is one word that describes them perfectly. Dedicated. Dedicated is the perfect word to describe my students' efforts toward their learning and growth as human beings day in and day out.
For 4 of my students, this will be my 3rd year teaching them!
For 3 others, this will be my 2nd year teaching them. Talk about being lucky, right? The reward of working with my students daily on their academic, social, emotional and mental development is an honor. Seeing smiles on their faces and receiving hugs every day makes me eager to enter my classroom each morning. I am forever grateful for my students and the gifts they have given me.
My Project
My classroom library is a core location within my classroom. My students love to cozy up on a beanbag, mat, chair, and even the floor when reading a book. My two favorite sounds during reading are silence and active conversations. Seeing my students so immersed in a book that they are literally in the zone is amazing. Similarly, hearing them conversing with their peers about what they have just read is equally amazing.
My students deserve to have books in their library that reflect their culture and lives.
My students come from low-income households and over 8 different countries! My goal is to fill my library with texts in which they can relate and say, "Ms. Peterson, I see myself in this book!" These books will provide my students with opportunities to immerse themselves in culturally relatable texts that they are eager to engage in.
