Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Title I Elementary School in Winston Salem North Carolina. We have a population consisting of 95% Hispanic and African American students and 100% of our population is on free or reduced lunch.
Excited for new opportunities, our students at HWES are thrilled to play any musical instruments.
We have over 600 students that use the instruments at our school and many of our instruments are damaged or worn. The kids at HWES love percussion and are extremely interested in stringed instruments.
My Project
The students at my school are in need of 20 Ukuleles. We were able to procure 10 with limited district funds which would only accommodate 1/3 of the class. My school is title 1 and our students are 100% free lunch.
Students will learn how to play the Ukulele which will inspire them to play more musical instruments in upper grade levels and provide an outlet to practice social and emotional learning.
Part of the music curriculum is to play melodic instruments which many schools achieve with recorders. Our 600+ student body are not all able to afford to buy their own recorders. A shared class set of Ukuleles will not only achieve this music standard but inspire students to make music and find a way to relieve stress.
