I teach 1st grade in a French immersion school. They are from diverse backgrounds with various competency levels - some are native speakers, others are just encountering the language. Some of them are going in France for holidays and others are here because their parents believe learning French is a big opportunity for them.
However, all have been extremely eager to practice French in the most interactive way.
Therefore, I'm currently looking into diversifying my lesson plans to accommodate them.
My Project
Active participation and attentiveness for a child means staying focus on new activities and understanding what the teacher wants from them.
My project is helping them to learn by themselves, without them realizing that they are going through a learning process.
This is demonstrated when they are focusing in an activity, being patient, and being independent.
One of my goals as a teacher is instructing my students how to be focused on an activity they are doing; how not to get distracted about what is happening around them. For example, LEGO, puzzles, GeoTix give this opportunity them as they are performing a hands-on activity.
Also, circle time is very good practice for them because they have to stay attentive about what other children are saying and remain patient. To listen and wait for their turn to speak is crucial. Doing that in a welcoming oval carpet will assist them in practicing these skills.
