Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"What is popular is not always right, what is right is not always popular." I try to teach my students this saying through the study of history. In this unit they learn about individuals who did what they felt was right, and in doing so they were very unpopular.
My students love to learn through hands on activities.
I try my best to come up with projects or activities that allow my students "do" history instead of only reading about history. My students are great individuals that just need a bit of guidance in their lives. I hope I can do my best to provide that guidance through the study of history. My students also love to learn in groups and love to use art to express what they have learned. This project combines everything they like to do in one project: group work, art, hands on activity and a life lesson through history. My students are in a low-income, low-performing school. My school is 98% Latino/a. My school is in a district that has suffered many budget cuts over the last several years.
My Project
My school has suffered severe budget cuts and there have been times when we do not have enough art supplies. My students need basic materials like markers to write their writing on their poster. Also need glue sticks to glue items onto their posters. One supply that my school never provided for were quality pastels to draw the historical figures. I teach six classes which is why I am asking for six of each supply.
Students are creating a life sized figure of an abolitionist or women's rights leader. In groups they are to write the life story of their assigned historical figure, and point to body parts to explain why that person was a hero. (example: Frederick Douglass had a huge heart because he cared for others.)
Thank you for you consideration.
Middle school aged children are very suspectable to peer pressure.
I understand they make decisions based not on if its right, but it its popular. I want students to make better decisions, to do the right thing when the situation arrives.
