Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are wonderfully diverse, but unfortunately, many live in poverty. I work in a Title I School with 100% receiving free lunches. Many of my students are non-native speakers and are learning how to live outside their home countries. Some take care of younger siblings and others are already working jobs to help support themselves and their families. As a school we are focused on literacy and closing the widening gap through reading.
Eleanor Roosevelt said "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams" and my students want to graduate and go into the world prepared to overcome and reach their dreams.
All of my sophomore and junior students are looking for success, but for many of them it seems impossible, due to the many obstacles they face. This year we are working on improving overall literacy. This project will allow me to read to my students about the content we are learning, build background knowledge, and most importantly help close the literacy gap.
These students deserve the opportunity to succeed. It is my duty to give them every tool available to be their best self.
My Project
Many of my students do not know English very well. Many have a limited scope of knowledge of Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, or Amelia Earhart. These individuals have played key roles in shaping American History.
These books will allow those lower reading level students to understand the content and will help give them the background to make meaningful connections to the world we live in.
This project allows my students to build on what we read at the beginning of a unit so they can understand and appreciate the primary source we read. It will also allow us to continue to improve our listening, writing, and reading skills, so we can continue to close the literacy gap.
