Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students cover a full spectrum at our diverse campus. They vary in race, culture, socioeconomic status and interests. Our campus serves approximately 635 students in grades 7th through 8th who are between the ages of 12 and 14.

Ethnically, our students are approximately 87% minority with 45% being Latin American, 26% African American, and 13% Asian and Pacific Islander.

About 25% of our students are currently English Language Learners. Our special education students make up 10% of the entire site.

All of the special education students and English language learners and their parents could benefit from having access to books about parenting, a very important skill to collaborate and work together.

My Project

February is just around the corner, and we are gearing up for African American History Month. This is a student-led project. We had our class doing research and brainstorm a list of heroes and historical events that they would like to study more in-depth. Our students need to have a diverse pool of resources.

Students have chosen books about people whom they feel have important modern voices.

One of these essential voices for them was Representative John Lewis, who passed away earlier this year. My students were very moved by Representative Lewis because he was a special education student growing up much like them. They wrote his family condolence letters this year after his passing. One of my class's biggest heroes is Representative Barbra Lee. They would love to find a book that tells her story. We continue to be inspired by her stance against sending our troops to war. One of my students said, "she is preventing the killing of our other future leaders." Representative Kamala Harris is another important figure to them because she was born locally and shares a piece of their history growing up in the Bay Area.

Some of the important heroes from the past are Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. My students were very moved to see clips of both of these great men speak. Bessie Coleman and Rosa Parks were two women they felt were very important to learn about as heroines from the past. Both of these fantastic trailblazers have inspired women throughout time. Another huge hero for my students is Melba Pattillo Beals because of her support for all students and her bravery.
