Heroes All Around Me (Part 2)

Help me give my students books, comic books, movies, and games so that they can complete structured reading, writing and discussion activities at home with their families.

My Students

A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles. ~ Christopher Reeve

For many of my students, obstacles are a constant, yet they look forward with strength and hope on a daily basis.

My students are energetic and fun inner-city high school students. My students have a range of disabilities including learning disabilities, visual impairments, autism and intellectual disabilities. A majority of them are also English Language Learners. My students show greater enthusiasm when learning is interactive, interesting and includes technology.

My school is located in a large, urban city. Of our 3,100 students, 94% are low-income, 10% of the students have disabilities, and 8% are English Language Learners. More than 75% of my students are low-income, have disabilities and/or are English Language Learners. I teach my students not to let their personal home situations, English Language Learner status or disabilities hinder their academic or social emotional growth.

My Project

My students continuously face barriers that no young person should have to deal with. Whether it is understanding and accepting their disabilities, being low-income, being minorities in a time where they are affected by stereotypes, living in communities plagued by violence, or having unique living situations, my students face disadvantages. Through our units on heroism and power, I would like students to look locally, in their homes and communities, to highlight the fact that overcoming barriers, reaching goals, and being a hero can be a norm and within reach.

I want my students to look within their families, communities and our city to get to know local heroes.

Based on classroom discussions, I have found that students think of heroes as individuals that are famous, deceased, or unlike them. Through reading culturally relevant texts, reading informational text, and through discussion activities, I would like students to learn about a variety of real-life heroes, specifically focusing on their characteristics and the work that they do.

At home, students will explore both real life and fictional heroes to engage in a variety of activities and discussion. Through this project, families can become actively engaged in student's academic success. Families can help students understand that that they can work to achieve their goals, rather than just hope to be successful. I am requesting educational games and various literature titles to support our class curriculum. I am also requesting several movie titles that support the non-stereotypical hero definition. Thank you for your support!
