My students need hermit crabs, food, gravel and terrariums to deepen their understanding of living organisms, their environment, and how the two interact and depend on one another.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are of middle school age. They vary between 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. We are a city school. All of my students are awesome! They truly are young scientists at heart with a desire to learn! They love hands-on activities so I try and base most lessons around anything that they can actually touch and manipulate. So, the more materials I can get them, the more fun we can have. The more fun we have, the more they can learn.
My Project
Science is awesome in my classroom because we do a ton of hands on experimenting. I really like the idea of live organisms in the classroom because not only are they a huge attention grabber, but the students can actually interact with these organisms while studying their behaviors. Typically we use dwarf frogs, but they have to stay in their aquarium and the students cannot interact with them as close as I'd like them to. With the hermit crab food, gravel and terrariums my students will be able to set up mini ecosystems. Using these mini ecosystems, my students can study their hermit crabs. They'll be able to really have a hands on experience while learning about these organisms, their structures and functions, and how they rely and interact with the environment around them!
