Help me give my students a Sony Cyber Shot digital camera to memorialize their community activism. Students will use the camera to create an ELL audio/visual project capturing their volunteer work in the community assisting immigrants.
I am a English Language Learner (ELL) teacher at an inner-city high school. My students are from all over the world and speak a variety of different languages. We have a large population of Hispanic students who speak Spanish. It is my job to help them to learn English.
Typically, my students are initially shy and withdrawn and afraid to speak.
But once they master even a few sentences in English, they break out of their shells and are anxious to learn more. They are lovable and sweet and really appreciate help.
My Project
I am asking for a Sony Cyber Shot Digital Camera DSC-HX99 for students to use to create an audio/visual project that showcases their volunteer efforts in the Hartford community over a six month period.
English Language Learner students will volunteer weekly to assist immigrants in Hartford to become United States citizens.
Over the course of a six month period, students will create an audio/visual project that shares the immigrants experiences on their path to become a United States citizen. The exhibit will explore topics such as: (1) how and why families immigrated to the United States; (2) how the United States differs from their birth country; (3) what opportunities do they hope for in the United States; (5) what have been the ups and downs of living in Hartford; and (6) what advise would they offer to others seeking citizenships in the United States, etc.
In addition, students will explain their experience as volunteers at an immigration center by sharing insights about how community service changed them; what they learned about themselves and others; and how they will continue to serve the community in the future.
Lastly, each student will honor his/her own culture by including information about his/her birth country, such as cultural foods, clothing, dances, music.
