Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year (2018-2019) is my second year as a teacher and I have twenty-four students. The school where I am currently teaching is located within a low socio-economic area in South San Jose and so funding for our school is limited. Eighty percent of the students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. Many of our students are English Language Learners. The school demographics are 48% Hispanic or Latino; 47% Asian; 1% Filipino; 1% White; 1% African-American; with other ethnicities individually counting for less than 1%.
Your support in providing the needs of the students in my classroom will help them achieve social, emotional, and academic success.
My Project
Our last unit on science this year will be focused on ocean animals and the conservation of its habitats. Aside from learning about it through engaging activities, watching actual videos, learning about animals through pictures and other media, I think that it will be a great learning experience if my students can actually go and see these animals at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
Most of my students come from low-income families and it's challenging for them to come up with the money to participate in this excursion.
With the support from the donors from DonorsChoose.org, my students will have a chance to experience something that will be unforgettable in their life. I would like this event to somehow highlight their journey in third grade. And I'm hoping that through this, my students will be more motivated to learn and become catalysts for change in our world.
