Watching chicks hatch from incubated eggs opens the door to the study of life science at an early age. While much information can be gleaned from books, seeing is believing. For an inner city child, watching the miracle of animal birth up close and personal is an experience they probably will never have, unless the school provides it. As Science Specialist at Claremont Math & Science Academy, I furnish a stimulating learning environment for all the students, grades K-8. Using as many outside resources and materials as I can get, I provide the spark that ignites the students' interest in the unknown. Claremont is a school with a can-do attitude and teachers that expect better than "good enough." The equipment needed for hatching eggs in the classroom is an incubator, a turning tray and fertilized eggs. These materials will provide the lesson for 88 second graders (3 classrooms), and will be available for other grades in the school to use. Having the equipment on hand will ensure that it is available when the classes are ready for the lesson. This hands-on experience will change the basic knowledge of "Chickens come from eggs" to "I saw a chicken come out of an egg!"
