Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students belong to a low-income/high poverty school district. Most of my students come from a very ethnically diverse community. We have students from Israel, the ex-Soviet Union countries that many Americans have never heard of, e.g., Georgia, Uzbekistan, Belorussia, and more. In addition, we serve students from all over Asia, Africa, Central and South America, and Mexico. There are 13 spoken languages, and our students come from 16 foreign countries. Many of them live far away from our school but take the long journey to come because they were made aware that we offer unique project-based instructions with Next Generation Science Standards. We are a Title I school, and most of our students receive free lunches. However, despite the challenging conditions many of them face, they show good attendance and are eager to learn. Some of my students have severe physical, learning, and emotional disabilities.
My Project
My students will have an opportunity to identify local environmental issues in the area of their school, neighborhood, and community. They will investigate ways to address the issue, and develop and take action to minimize the environmental issues using a touch screen computer I am requesting. My students desperately need one computer to search the environmental issues, such as the level of CO2. Using the computer, my students will research, examine and analyze trends in CO2 levels, and how it is transferred to the atmosphere and biosphere. They will identify ways to reduce the amount of CO2. My students also need a pair of nice earphones to watch certain documentary videos to understand the impact of CO2 on the environment, and that's why we need one pair of earphones.
My students need to be aware of and study environmental issues because their generation is the one that will be impacted the most.
Another group of students will use the same computer to research if renewable energy can be used to provide sustainable transportation in the overpopulated city. Using a computer, students research the environmental issue and will create an infographic.
My students, thanks to DonorsChoose, will have a computer and a pair of earphones that will help them offer resolutions for environmental issues caused by the human impact.
