I work as a preschool special education developmental classroom teacher. All of my students have a delay in their development, including but not limited to speech/language, functional communication, social skills, fine and gross motor development, self-help skills, and/or cognitive delays.
All children in my classroom are dependents of United States soldiers, and over half come from homes of low socioeconomic status.
Our focus is on the social and emotional health and well-being of children, functional communication, motor development, and preparing students for kindergarten and beyond. Learning is hands-on, minds-on engagement in our program that is play-based, literacy-rich, and full of self-discovery, working towards becoming confident and independent learners.
My Project
The addition of the Canon PIXMA TS9520 All In one Wireless Printer, Cardinal 2 Inch 3 Ring Binder, AIEX 39.37 Feet/12m Hook And Loop Self Adhesive Tape Roll, and Martha Stewart Home Office with Avery 5 Tab Plastic Dividers will provide me with all supplies needed to created individual Picture Exchange Communication (PECs) Books for each of my students experiencing significant delays in communication.
More than ever, my students need a means to express themselves, communicate their wants and needs and make requests throughout the day.
Families have been working diligently, finding creative ways to increase vocabulary, expressive communication and decrease behaviors that come with the frustrations of not being understood.
Each PECs book will be personalized to meet the individual needs of ever child, including tab dividers for ease of organization and learning how to navigate each category, including: food, toys, art materials, attributes, emotions. Parents will be provided with modeling and support of how to introduce and effectively use the pictures as a means of communication with their child, currently through distance learning and when we return to the classroom for face to face learning.
