My Students

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a puzzle. I am one piece of that puzzle in my students lives.

My students are very unique like all children.

They do have the added burden of Autism Spectrum Disorder. When you walk into my classroom, you may see a kindergartner being praised for using the potty independently, a 1st grader working at his work station on independent work jobs and a couple 2nd graders working at the big table in a reading group with me. My students are mostly non-verbal, ranging from kindergarten to 3rd grade. My classroom is considered self-contained, meaning my students do not need to leave my room for anything, but that is not the case. The public K-5th grade school that I teach at embraces my students and the general education teachers and their peers expect their friends, my students, to be in their classroom everyday. The school is a wonderful environment for special needs children and typically developing children because it fosters tolerance, understanding and patience. My students are the youngest and most severe autism needs in the city.

My Project

My students have to have hands on manipulatives to learn. I cannot pick up any curriculum, math or reading, and teach from it. I prepare, modify and adapt everything for my students unique learning styles. The resources that I have requested will enhance the functional skills that my students practice each day. My students are mostly non-verbal. I have to be very creative for them to show me their knowledge. These items will all allow my students to demonstrate to me and others that not being able to speak does not mean you don't have anything to say.

My students are my passion.

Autism is such a huge concern and topic. My students are not children of the famous who with a special diet will be "cured of autism." They are the hand-flapping, self-stimming, sometimes very self injurious, non-verbal children of middle class families who just want the best for their kids. My students teach me new things everyday, they are amazing and I would not change what I do for anything. My students give me the inspiration to get up each morning and hope.
