We are team teachers with approximately 42 students in our second-grade class. Our school is a Title I school. Many of our students are on free or reduced-price lunch and often receive snack packs on Fridays just to sustain them on the weekends. We service 23 different apartment complexes, several of which are Section 8 government housing.
Even with these challenges, our students come to school with a zest for learning.
They are motivated learners who generally have almost perfect attendance. Those light bulb moments are what make teaching so fulfilling.
My Project
For the last couple of years, I have had at least one homeless student in my classroom. sometimes more. In our community times are tough for many of our families. Socks and gloves don't sound like a big deal, but often times these little essentials, especially during the cold months, can mean warm feet and hands for my 2nd graders.
The books I am requesting will help all my students understand that not everyone has a place to live or the latest styles.
I want my students to be compassionate to students in all backgrounds. The socks and gloves will help keep my students that can't afford these small essentials, stay a little bit warmer during winter.
