Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Helping high school students who are struggling readers is a very challenging undertaking. I am a Resource Room teacher of 40 students at Bronx Regional High School in the South Bronx.
Bronx Regional High School is known as a transfer school. We accept the students who have not been successful in other schools. Our student population is generally older than the average high school student populations. Our students come from low income working families. Some of them are parents themselves, some are married, most are just dealing with a host of domestic, economic, and everyday life situations. The entire student body receives free lunch. All of the students are African American, Afro- Caribbean, African, and Latino.
I would like my students to have an item called "Solo". Solo, is a software bundle that includes reading and writing tools. The reading assistant allows students to be able to read independently across the curriculum. The reading selections include history, science, literature, websites, etc. Solo allows for differentiated instruction because struggling readers can become independent readers all of who are reading on different individual levels using Read OutLoud.
They can choose to have a word, sentence or paragraph spoken as needed. They can go back to the word, sentence, paragraph, select it and it is repeated if necessary. They can read along, sound out a word or words as many times as they need to in order to get it. Each student is allowed to work at his/her own pace. The Draft Builder and Co-Writer, the writing assistants, take them through the writing process with the option of voice feedback, which helps with the editing process.
Solo will benefit my students a great deal. When you have students who are 17-19 years old in a transfer school the average length of stay is 1-2 years. We really don't have enough time to remediate their decoding needs. Solo will allow us to develop their comprehension skills at an age appropriate level. This will give them some confidence, being that it is personal, and with headphones on nobody knows their business, which is a big thing for teenagers.
