Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school's fundamental approach to education is to foster character development through a small school environment with firm discipline and high levels of parent involvement. Our program gives children from diverse cultural backgrounds an opportunity to succeed at a high level, with enriching coursework and foreign language education from kindergarten through eighth grade.
Fourth grade is an exciting year for students and teachers because it is in fourth grade that children begin assignments requiring long-range planning, collaborating on group assignments, using research tools, and developing a real writing style.
Children in my classroom test their predictions as they study complex systems, and expand their study of social studies beyond the knowledge of our local community and into the realms of Florida history and government.
The atmosphere in my classroom is light and playful, to better support my bright, energetic fourth graders in reaching their learning goals. We enjoy releasing butterflies, dancing together, and growing together.
My Project
One of our Florida Health Standrds is “advocacy”, for our students to demonstrate the ability to advocate for individual, peer, school, family, and community health. In building care packages that include deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, chapstick, and dental floss for the homeless my students would be acting as real advocates for community health. We would learn about the role each object plays in good health, and we would explore the importance of helping others in our community feel healthy and clean. Also, one of our social studies standards calls for students to “explain the importance of public service, voting, and volunteerism.” We would discuss our impact as citizens as we volunteer and provide a public service.
