Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

It is my goal to provide the students I teach with a diverse approach to instruction, nurturing and stability within the classroom. I teach 3rd and 4th grade self-contained students with special needs in a low income area. All of my students are male and are either emerging readers or non-readers. Since the beginning of the school year, my students have not received phonics material that would assist my implementation of the curriculum. It's a huge challenge to teach students with special needs and not have materials that support those types of learners. I've used this downfall to maximize my teaching skills by creating ways to get my students to respond to learning. Phonics is an important part of the literacy process when learning how to read and acquiring the necessary skills to identify words. There are many programs that assist children with learning how to read. The program that my students will benefit most is called the ?Wilson Reading System?. This is a 12-step program designed to help remediate problems in reading, writing and spelling. My students will have more control over their learning process with these hands-on activities.
