I am a middle school math coach, looking to build a professional development library for our math department. There is so much to learn about math education, and as teachers, we are continuing to learn how to do what we do better. With math scores as low as they are in our state, we need to step up our teaching game to help fill in gaps for students while teaching grade-level content. An area that all our students need support in is Number Sense and Fact Fluency. Mastering appropriate questioning strategies and short daily routines can lead to increased student understanding of numbers, how numbers relate to each other and how to use foundational math facts to derive complex math facts. Students are empowered to approach problems not just with integers but with fractions and decimals as well.
These books will grow the professional development library to provide resources to all teachers leading to improved fact fluency and number sense teaching strategies.
It is essential for students to develop connections between numbers and fluency in using rational numbers with all operations in middle school. As a department, we want to improve our instruction in helping students make these connections so students understand why and how numbers work instead of memorizing tricks that might not always work.
