Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is comprised of about 70% Latinx students, 15% African American, 10% Pacific Islander/Asian, and 5% Caucasian. This school is located in a low-income neighborhood that has very limited resources for students. Our Tk-8th grade school has been around for 25 years and we have always valued the importance of learning languages, specifically Spanish since the majority of the population that this city is comprised of are from Latin decent.
I would like for our students to be fully prepared to enter high school with a clear understanding of the Spanish language and these dictionaries would help our students out tremendously.
In the past, our students were learning Spanish through reading books out-loud as a class but over the years with new instructors coming into the role the curriculum has shifted a bit. We are oh so very grateful for any and all help we receive with purchasing these dictionaries for our classroom.
My Project
Our students have been limited in their Spanish vocabulary by what they learn each week in Spanish as well as applying what they already know from their personal lives, I would like to ignite their interest in writing and reading in Spanish with looking up words on their own so that they become confident writers and readers. Reading in Spanish, both internally and out loud, greatly benefits students lives in the future after they leave our school. Writing will improve their critical thinking skills and open up the possibility of students having meaningful conversations with one another confidently. Having these dictionaries would help our students begin to develop necessary skills that will help them even in their daily lives. I would ideally like for students to be able to read along in read-aloud style with the teacher, look up words they do not know, and also be able to write summaries about what they have read. The dictionaries will help expand the students' vocabulary tremendously.
