Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Obesity is becoming an epidemic among today's youth. Unbeknownst to my students, the candy and soda that they consume each day actually have a cumulative and detrimental effect on their health. For this reason, I am proposing "Helping Students Make Healthy Choices." This experience will include a screening of the film, "Supersize Me" as well as the distribution of Nalgene water bottles to each student in my homeroom class at CIS 303.
Before I became a teacher, I was an epidemiologist in the San Francisco Bay Area. I worked closely with a professor who helped ban soda machines and end junk food related contracts in the Oakland School District. Her work to remove these machines stemmed from research that soda consumption has been linked to adolescent weight gain and obesity, especially among adolescents who consumed one or more sodas per day (Obes Res. 2004 May;12(5):778-88, South Med J. 2004 Jun;97(6):571-7). I did not realize what a problem soda intake was until I became a teacher in the Bronx.
CIS 303 is a small public middle school in the Bronx where I am currently a science teacher. When finances are slim and time a rare commodity, many of my students' parents end up relying upon fast food as a source for convenient and cheap meals. Consequently, my students consider fast food, especially McDonald's, a necessary staple. Additionally, my students arrive each day armed with a bag of candy and a large soda. Although I have banned soda and candy from the classroom, my students have a hard time understanding my motivation. I hope to introduce them to the aspects of a healthy diet as well as the detriments of a bad diet through “Supersize Me,” a documentary of a man who challenged himself to a 100% McDonald's diet for 30 days. The documentary shows his weight progression as well as the development of health problems in the short time that he undertook this challenge. The purpose of the Nalgene bottles is to provide the students with a cheap and healthy option to soda. Nalgene bottles are attractive and as such, will encourage students to bring the bottles with them to school. Additionally, they are extremely sturdy and able to withstand the attention of the average 7th grader. Lastly, water from the tap is far cheaper than daily purchases of soda, making this option not only more healthy, but also financially beneficial.
