Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Every child deserves a champion: an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists they become the best they can possibly be."
-Rita Pierson, Educator_
Being able to understand my students' needs for learning promotes this project for a projector.
In my classroom, you will find a wide range of learners.
These students are in a middle school 12:1:1 classroom setting due to their specific disabilities. The school is specialized for students in kindergarten through 8th grade with severe to profound disabilities. My students have severe cognitive deficits that prevent them from mainstreaming in the general education population. In class, there are students who can read and write independently, while others struggle to identify letters in the alphabet. This is true for all subject areas. Although these students are at the same chronological age group, their learning abilities are significantly different. At times, it can be a challenge to teach the entire class as a whole with such a large gap in learning needs. All of my students enjoy learning with technology. Technology (like computers, laptops, and iPads) gives them the opportunity to learn through various learning styles: auditorily, visually, and kinesthetically.
My Project
With a projector, my class will be able to complete lessons and activities as a whole. With the use of a projector, I know that my students will learn by using their unique learning styles. For instance, if I taught a lesson on nouns, my students would be able to engage in learning through videos, songs, and visuals that will be displayed on the white board from the projector. Another benefit with the projector is that it allows my students to come to the white board and use markers to white over the projected image. Since I do not have a Smart Board in my classroom, a projector would allow me to use the white board as a learning tool with visuals and sounds. I have used the computer in the past to display images to my students, but with a projector, all my students will be highly motivated and engaged to learn. It is so important for students with special needs to be able to learn the way they can instead of the way others want them too.
I know that this project for a projector will make a miraculous impact on my students' lives.
It is heartbreaking to see my students struggle to learn and retain vital information that is needed to continue their future. Most of them are aware of their disabilities but continue to work hard. With a projector, I know that my students will succeed in learning. They will be supported by a new generation of learning in the classroom. Like Rita Pierson said, "...become the best they can possibly be."
