Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a wonderful group of boys and girls on their way to being great young men and women. They come from mostly Latino and Somali backgrounds and demonstrate pride of their heritage.
Our regular education classroom is made of 35%-40% English Language Learners and students who receive pull out support for moderate learning disabilities.
Most of my students come from a low-income households that can not afford basic school supplies. Many students' caregivers would like to be more involved in their children's education but generally do not have the option to take time off from work to attend school events. These student deserve all the best life offers and any available support to help them achieve their goals.
My Project
My goal is to have a classroom set of scientific calculators and basic calculators for years to come. In middle school math students are introduced to more complex math problems involving exponents and scientific notation.
Although students first learn how to reason through math problems with pencil and paper, the expectation is that as they reach more advanced math courses students will already have the basic understanding of how to use scientific and graphing calculators.
Having this basic technology available for my 7th and 8th grade students will enable them to be more confident about their ability to fully participate in high school math courses.
