In my classroom, I work with students who learn in a variety of different ways, and in order for them to learn to the best of their ability, require necessary modifications to help them succeed. I teach in two different types of classrooms. I have a group of students in an in-class support, co-teaching classroom for math, and I have two groups of students in a resource pull-out math classroom. All three of these groups contain students who work at a variety of different levels and speeds, while also having various learning disabilities and learning styles that impact the way that they learn. All of my students learn the same math content as the general education population. However, the resources needed to teach them in a way that they can comprehend the material are different than their peers'.
"If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn" -Ignacio Estrada.
With every student in each class needing their own modifications and differentiation, and being in such a small town, my school does not have the funding (nor does my wallet) to provide all of the materials needed to help these students fully succeed.
In my classroom, I aim to have students take control of their own learning and have fun while doing so. With the LATI (Learner Active, Technology Infused) style classroom that I have implemented, students are able to take the materials given to them and explore the topic in the way that agrees with their specific learning style. The resources that I am requesting funding for, including: beanbags and beanbag filling, noise reducing headphones, organizational filing box and jeopardy game buzzers will all help me differentiate for each of those different learning styles, help keep students focused, and get students engaged!
The goal of these resources and my classroom is to allow student choice to help foster success.
The most expensive and most important item for my classroom is the noise reducing headphones. They allow my students to use their Chromebooks without distracting others and the fact that they are noise reducing helps students focus on their work! Also, the jeopardy buzzers will provide me with another game to help teach students and plan review games, the organizational filing bin will help me organize their basic fact practice activities so that students can show their progress with material we work on in addition to the sixth grade curriculum. Futhermore, I want to continue to have flexible seating options, and the beanbag and beanbag filling (for previously ordered beanbags) will allow students to work in an environment that they feel comfortable learning in and enjoy coming to every day! All of these resources will help me address the needs of each individual student while helping them find their passions in school!
