My Students

My students come from a variety of backgrounds, African-American, Caucasian, Hispanic, Asians, and mixed backgrounds. A large majority of my students come from the foster care system or low socioeconomic backgrounds and really struggle with trust and relationship building in the classroom. Since I teach special education the students I teach are not always a typical high school student. Some students are intellectually disabled, Autistic, or have behavior problems, emotionally disturbed and they are all intermixed in the classroom. Many have experienced trauma throughout their life. Keeping them comfortable and feeling at home in order to trust me is one of the most important things.

Providing students with opportunities to improve their math skills to be successful in their everyday life is a main goal of mine.

In order to do this, I need a variety of resources, workbooks and technology to assist them in being successful in the classroom. Students need access and introduction to math skills in every day life so that they quit asking "When will we use this." The goal of my classroom is to help students be more financially successful in their future.

My Project

Having books to be able to differentiate instruction with students will allow me to provide different opportunities for real life math. Students who come from low income families need chances to have numbers and math skills modeled for them to help them succeed and break the gap for generational poverty. These books allow me to provide differentiation within the classroom as well as allow them access to learn math skills that will help them in their jobs or within their daily life.

The workbooks provided within this project will give options of counting calories, calculating gas mileage, budgeting when shopping for food and calculating area within a home so that they can learn skills that will assist them and assist them in becoming college and career ready.Giving these resources can assist a student to learn skills that they could use in their everyday life in a career.

Skills they may not have access to otherwise. The goal within my classroom is to be able to individualize education as much as possible to move the students closer to their individual career goals.
