Help me give my students books and an easel so they may practice reading and writing in their new language; games, a doll house so that they may express themselves through play and snacks as incentives and rewards.
I am a social worker at an elementary school in which over 75% of the students are originally from another country. The position is new and so I am helping the students and families understand how a social worker can help them. Being bilingual and bi-cultural helps as trust is a big factor in being able to reach out to many of the students and their families. Many of our students are so excited to be in the US and in school. They often come from humble homes, are so eager to learn and so grateful for the opportunity.
They are learning to speak English and are so excited when they learn a phrase or two and can communicate with their peers and teachers in English.
This makes them so happy and is such an incentive for them because they see success. As a social worker, I encourage them, support them and help them make this transition to a new country, which can be daunting at times. It is such a joy to see them thrive!
Students will read the books in both Spanish and English and can practice their newly acquired skills. They can use the easel to draw and write giving them a means to express themselves.
As a social worker, I see many students that are having difficulty adjusting to a new culture, often I see behavioral concerns and through drawing and playing they are able to express their feelings.
I have worked with children who have been able to deal with adversity and challenges through play and the ability to express their feelings. These can be a barrier to learning and once dealt with can improve the child's chances of being successful in school.
