My students need Didax Algebra Lab Gear to make abstract Algebra topics more accessible and concrete. They provide a geometric interpretation of symbol manipulation, thereby enriching all students' understanding.
My students feel that since they have never been successful they will never be. They try hard but lack the skills necessary to be successful. Most of my students are from low income families that struggle every day. They also have communication issues, so learning math by listening to a teacher doesn’t help them. They attend a low incomes school, and on most days don’t have the supplies necessary to be successful. With the use of manipulatives all students have the chance to learn in a nontraditional manner.
Because of the wide variety of learning styles of my students I use a range of techniques to help every student in my class.
Leaving a student behind is not an option and my students have all been left behind at one point. In my class they work hard to try to catch up so that they can be at grade level.
My Project
The Didax Algebra Lab Gear will help my students make abstract ideas more concrete, and it particularly helps visual, spatial, and kinesthetic learners because students can move the pieces around and see a problem in different ways. Algebra is a difficult subject for students because most of it has never been seen before. It is also a required class that has to be passed for graduation, so conceptual understanding is vital to their success.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work when they have something that they can touch and move around to aid in understanding of concepts.
The Algebra Lab Gear Algebra 1 book will be used as a resource to help aid in teaching and taking the concept one step further.
