Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a Title I teacher, in a high poverty school, it is imperative that these students from low income households are given a solid foundation for learning. My students come from diverse backgrounds and many lack the stability and support at home necessary to succeed.
My students are eager to learn, but they need the resources and support to go that extra step.
Many of our families lack the ability to provide for the daily supplies. Our school-wide clothing closet is used on a regular basis. Food is sent home with students for the weekend. We have many Puerto Rican refugees from Hurricane Maria who are unfamiliar with our culture and do not speak English.
My Project
Our newest students lost everything to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. They came to our city hoping for a fresh start and new opportunities for a better life. Luckily, our school is supported by an amazing local community that provides clothing, backpacks, and school supplies to our students in need.
My students need this Chromebook and headphones to help them acquire English and communicate with classmates.
My students will use the Chromebook to access online programs to aid in learning English. Other students will use the device to complete research projects and access learning programs acquired by our district. The headphones will allow my newest students to listen to and read a story in their native language and also in English. This will help them make sense of our language. Students will use the Math Wrap-Up Keys to build and master their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts.
