Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Not all students learn in the same way. For students with Autism, visuals are a needed support to verbal direction and instruction in order to maximize understanding.
My class is made up of eleven active and animated boys.
Most of them have Autism, but all of them are special in more ways than one. They're unique personalities make the classroom a diverse and bold group who enjoy learning, but need to see and feel to understand.
My Project
My students benefit greatly from visuals and some of them have limited verbal communication. The printer would be used to copy real-life images for vocabulary, as well as symbols to represent students’ wants, needs and goals. These will help ensure I am reaching them during instruction and give them a way to express themselves. Verbal direction to sit might not be processed, but by using a picture of a child sitting along with the direction, my students can grasp what is being said. My students like to be able hold and touch things, so having a laminator for visuals and work can really ensure these will last in such an active and hands-on room. Because transitions and seating can be challenging, a visual timer can indicate when to move to the next task and individual timers provide a signal for certain students to have a sensory break, and then return back to work. The wiggle seats are beneficial in increasing the time they can stay seated and on task.
Your generosity will greatly improve the educational experience of my students.
Visuals will unlock the curriculum in their young minds. They will be able to follow important visual steps, as well as see what is being taught. Many of my students cannot verbalize their needs, leading to frustration. Visual symbols will allow them an avenue of expression and limit the stress of unmet needs. With smoother transitions and key visual supports, my students will gain the most out of their education.
