Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my school are curious about the world and committed to making their community a better place. Many of my students speak English as their second language, and struggle finding books that they connect to and enjoy.
Some students have a negative connotation about reading, and one of my great joys in life is connecting a student to a piece of literature that speaks to them, that helps them understand themselves and our world differently.
Hearing from former students that they still have the book that I gave them, or that our classroom novels and discussions helped them decide who they wanted to become is a bright part of life, and I want that to continue.
My Project
Great books allow our kids to connect both to themselves and the world at large. Books allow my students to dream and learn beyond the world they know, to imagine a different future.

Lewis... that poster is on my classroom wall, and it speaks a truth that I desperately want my students to understand. Having a robust library in my classroom makes that experience possible, but over the years my selection has dwindled as students wanted to keep the books they had grown to love. There is no work more important than sparking and maintaining a curiosity for all the gifts that books give to our lives.
