As the art teacher at Leadership High School, I have been amazed at the fact that most senior students have not had any art since second grade. My curriculum goals are to create lessons that challenge the students, allow them to express themselves and introduce them to new types of media. We just completed a clay unit, where so many of the students fell in love with creating ceramic works. Students came in (by their own choice) after school and during lunch to complete their projects. They remarked how they would really love the option of working on a potter's wheel. As a former ceramicist myself, I know how gratifying it is to create works on the wheel. Students would greatly benefit from having a potter's wheel in the class. We could use clay to make vases and bowls for fundraisers. Because we do not have the resources for a kiln, students are already familiar with air-dry clay and will be thrilled to have the opportunity to work with clay again. Please consider helping our students develop their artistic skills!
