This next school year, I am going to be switching grade levels and will be teaching first grade! I feel very fortunate to be getting the opportunity to be working with 25 energetic first graders and am excited to see what this next year will bring. I work at an inner-city school where the majority of our students receive free or reduced price lunch. We have a very high ELL (English Language Learners) and special education population.
Many of our students have an inconsistent home life and just having them come to school on a regular basis is reason to celebrate.
Before we worry about curriculum, we try to make sure that their basic needs are met. Despite their difficulties outside of school, the majority of my students come to school eager to learn. Our school is always trying to provide a warm community for our students to grow as individuals.
I am always greeted by smiling faces and big hugs, especially after a weekend. I believe it is our duty to provide our students with the best learning opportunities and materials. Unfortunately, our school budget doesn't always allow for that.
My Project
First graders are very enthusiastic about school, they're excited to be in, and to explore, the classroom. My hope is to create a first grade library and gain classroom demonstration texts for these eager first graders. During the school year, my students will be developing their own reading preferences and opinions, to have access to quality stories and characters not only in reader's workshop, but also in writer's workshop. I would use these texts to teach during reading and writing throughout the year, while also having similar texts in the classroom library for students to revisit and explore independently.
My hope is that my future first graders will meet their new favorite characters, or make new discoveries about old favorites, that they can share with their families.
Not all of my students have access to books outside of the classroom, I want to create an environment that empowers my students to be confident readers. The difference these texts would make is immense in being able to do that from an early stage of the classroom. Beginning the upcoming school year with these books would be an incredible opportunity for my students because it will help them get excited about reading the first time they peek into the classroom library. It will also give me a chance to make connections with my students through the texts that I will use as teaching tools and discussions with the students and their families.
