I am a third grade teacher in an Equity + school. We currently have about 81% of our students receiving free and reduced lunch. In my own classroom, 95% of the students are on free lunch, five are English as a Second Language students and three are receiving Special Education services. Because of the diversity in my classroom, many of my children are at different academic levels, which requires me to differentiate my instruction for each student. To help me better serve these students, I would like to have a set of genre kits to help me to teach reading comprehension skills. The kits each have their own literature theme, including historical fiction, realistic fiction, adventure, biographies, fairy tales and mysteries. The kit comes with six books, all of a varying level so that all of the children can find at least one book at his or her level. The use of these kits would allow me to give children at every reading level an opportunity to work independently at his or her own level working with a text that is of a high interest to that particular child. Each kit also comes with a set of activities pre-designed to use with each text to help with reading comprehension development. With these kits, I feel I would be better equipped to serve the children in my classroom and much more able to expose to them to all the different genres of reading.
