Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

After taking this course, I will be able to more effectively identify struggling students and be more equipped to help all the students that I work with. Most of the kids that I work with do not speak English as their first language and need to learn English proficiently as they become school-age. The course I am hoping to take will allow me to assess kids better and see where students are most struggling in terms of their comprehension. The course teaches numerous strategies for teachers to use to help English learners better access content. A child cannot learn the basics of things like the solar system and plant life cycles if they can't understand the basic texts and materials that are provided in school, so I need to learn strategies to help make those texts more accessible. Early literacy development is so important. This January, I taught transitional kindergarten and I loved seeing my students make connections between the words that they see in print and the words that they hear every day. I want to help students develop a broader vocabulary and develop their writing. This course should help me gain the strategies I need to help the unique population I work with to do these things.
