Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they are enthusiastic, active, and eager to learn! My goal is to keep activities simple, yet challenging academically while simultaneously providing creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are creative, clever, and very spontaneous, like curious wiggle worms excited for new learning experiences!
Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "ideal". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence and become life-long learners.
My Project
My students need engaging word building activities to practice independently reading and writing sentences. My students will be empowered during workstations to test themselves and their classmates on building, reading and writing high frequency words, consonant-vowel-consonant words, consonant-vowel-consonant-e words and forming sentences with them. Your generous donation to our project will improve our kindergarten classroom by pushing emergent readers to become great readers while having fun. It would create a sense of accomplishment at an early age creating life-long learners ready to take over the world without fear.
My students need word building activities so they can learn essential reading and writing skills, such as changing sounds, word analysis, and spelling.
These activities will help them decode words with different spelling patterns, which will help them improve their reading fluency, as well as their writing. The Phonics Center Building Words will challenge scholars to read the words on the cards with the help of a picture and build the words using the tangible letters that come with the packet. The High Frequency Word Center gives them the opportunity to practice reading and building words that are irregular in the English language, but essential for reading since they appear often in the books. The Emergent reading books will help them to apply the skills learned in the centers by reading words with different spelling patterns and irregular words. The magazine holder organizers will be used to store materials at their desks for easy access for them.
Students will feel empowered and in charge of their own learning while having fun learning. Your generous donation to our project will improve our kindergarten classroom by pushing emergent readers to become great readers while having fun!
