Helping Autistic Children Communicate with the World

The cost of (1) HP Pavilion dv8210us Widescreen Notebook Computer and (1) Tech Gear Nylon Notebook Computer Case (from Office Depot, Inc.) is $1617, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.

As a teacher of autism for the past six years, it has been my experience that the majority of children with autism have communication difficulties, such as answering the "wh" questions (what, where, who, etc.), yes or no questions, the inability to read facial expressions (angry, upset, scared), or simply not being able to communicate verbally (non-verbal). Interactive and repetitive teaching is the key to success with these children. It is essential to give them a voice to speak and communicate with their world (either through voice output device or typing on the computer). I am writing this proposal to ask for a laptop computer to benefit my children. I will be able to pull one student out of the classroom and work with that child on a one-on-one basis using the laptop computer as a fun tool to educate them and giving them a voice to communicate with me and their outside world. By using interactive teaching and supplementing the social skills that they need to answer questions through computer programs, I feel it is an excellent strategy to continue and reinforce what is being taught manually by me, but in a more graphic, kid-friendly format. Thank you for reading my proposal. It is my goal to help each of my autistic students to become fully independent as adults. Skills which seem secondary for us, even as children, are difficult to grasp for them. Help me help them. Give them the independence they deserve. Thank you.
