Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a post-Holidays wish: to have "Leap Frog" equipment for my kindergarten class. They have excellent teaching games on the market today. If the little ones had access to these games and programs, they could work on them independently to learn the alphabet, develop word recognition, and learn family sounds and rhyming words. They could even begin to read little sentences on their own, before they even reach the first grade!
As my students must meet the demanding New York Standards, they need all the help they can get. We have a kindergarten curriculum which includes reading, mathematics, science and social studies. It is strongly academically oriented. Along with improving reading skills, the Leap Pad system can help them learn numbers, shapes, patterns, and telling time.
My class includes many students with special needs, including speech impairments, emotional difficulties, and limited knowledge of English. Eight of my 23 students are bi-lingual, one student speaks Chinese, and two others are hyper-active. Sadly, I have children whose parents are in jail, students who live in shelters, students whose parents are dying of AIDS, students who have AIDS, and students who are being raised by their grandparents because their parents are unable to do so. In comparison to students who live in the suburbs, the inner-city students are lagging behind. They can't afford private tutors and they don't have educational materials at home. Their exposure to lead poisoning, drugs and crime has an impact on their learning.
My goal at the end of the school year is to have my students reading and completing grade level activities in order for them to be ready for the first grade. The Leap Frog materials would serve a tremendous need in our classroom.
