I teach Spanish at a project-based school in downtown San Diego. Our school's focus on project-based learning means that students learn academic content by engaging in authentic and meaningful challenges that solve real-world problems in their school and community.
My goal is to engage and empower my students so that every single one of them can learn, grow, and connect.
As a language teacher, I want to teach them to both value language and to use it, especially as a vehicle for connecting to their community.
My Project
In addition to teaching Spanish, I am running an after school photography club to teach my middle school students another way of communicating - through photography! We meet weekly to share examples of inspiring photos, learn new tricks and tips, explore photo editing, and capture photos both in our school and in our community.
I want this opportunity to be available to all my students.
My school does not currently have the budget to pay for after school clubs or supplies, so we are relying on technology and supplies the school already has and teachers willing to donate their free time. Some students bring their own cameras or smartphones to take photos, and the rest have been taking photos with the school's iPads. However, these iPads are not always available and do not allow the same level of control as a camera as we learn more about exposure and the principles of photography. Having a few cameras on hand will allow more students to learn more about photography and to take amazing photos. We also hope to have some mats to frame and present our photos. We have been sharing our photos digitally, but seeing your photos on a screen can't compare with seeing it printed and matted professionally!
