This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I co-teach a class of 40 Fifth grade students. We are an urban, public school with a 93% poverty rate. My students face many challenges in and out of the classroom. They are growing up in high poverty communities where getting their basic needs met is a struggle for the people who love and care for them. A school is a place where their needs are always put first.
My students are clever, creative and energetic learners.
They love reading, learning, and playing with their friends, positive attention, and seeing themselves grow. With this in mind, we work to create a warm, loving and positive learning environment and experience at school.
Our school focuses on "Restorative Practices" which will, in turn, teach my students on how to restore conflicts in a healthy way. We focus on developing their independence and self-confidence through these experiences so students can develop the tools they need to continue on a path of growth and excellence.
My Project
Our students are able to utilize computer programs that individualize their learning in both Math and ELA. These programs are part of their everyday learning and they are excited to be able to use them, however, there is no money for headphones which makes it difficult for students to work at a computer and able to focus due to sounds from other computers. Your donation would help students to focus only on their computer lessons without hearing the other lessons going on around them. Our district laid off one hundred and fifty teachers in December so buying headphones is not an option.
