This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is located in North Philadelphia, in a high poverty neighborhood. My students range from 8 to 10 years old, and are in grades 3rd to 5th. They are also diagnosed with Autism.

They are very sweet, loving students, but require a lot of individualization in order to learn.

This requires a lot of materials for differentiation. The class is a mixture of verbal and nonverbal students, which requires additional resources and materials. Some students require a 1 on 1 assistant for daily activities.

My Project

I have 2 students who are nonverbal and have difficulty communicating through the basic pec board pieces communication system. In order to help streamline and possibly increase their communication, I would like to use Communication apps that are available through the Apple store. The students will have colorful representations of colors, objects, activities, and request/need items without the commitment of spending hundreds of dollars on expensive devices that are not always a match for the students' needs.

I really want to come out of the box and try something new!

However, since the students are still learning we can change the communication apps and symbols as needed.
